Single-Acting vs Double-Acting Hydraulic Cylinders

Cylinder action should be selected from force direction, return method, motion control, hydraulic circuit, and real machine conditions.

In a single-acting cylinder, pressurized oil produces motion in one direction, while load weight, a spring, or another external force returns the piston. It suits applications that need controlled force in one direction and have a predictable return method.

A double-acting cylinder directs oil to both sides of the piston so extension and retraction are actively controlled. Because the rod occupies area on one side, effective area and available force differ between directions.

Circuit and valve design directly affect the choice. Double-acting cylinders need controlled supply and return paths, while single-acting arrangements need reliable return motion and oil discharge.

Both configurations require bore, rod diameter, stroke, working pressure, speed, mounting, and sealing data. Duty cycle, oil temperature, contamination, and service access also affect packing, wipers, and guides.
